![]() Hoplites, though, were not medium infantry as seen here. Same tactic was used in cavalry tactics with arrows, javelins/pila, axes (of the Franks), and even pistol discharges (of the Pike and Shot Period). ![]() Good throwing distance for the Amazons' javelins would be 20 feet +++, thus avoiding the spearpoints. Thomas: great image! And now the General Staff critique: The Amazon commander was foolish to get withing thrusting range of the hoplites! As T.Rex noted: take them from the flank or rear: their spearpoints are not there, and once CQB (close quarters battle) starts, they must drop the spears or die. Weapons: bow and arrow, lance and short sword. The belonged to the Sarmatian peoples, east of the Black Sea. This was SO strange to the Greeks, a whole mythology grew up around them. The Amazons were a tribe in which the wives accompanied their husbands into battle, covering their backs. ![]() Got to be a rather heavy load with many thick shafts weighing one's arm down. Spears were other placed on the shoulders of the men, or carried on the waist, the spears from the men behind resting on the forearm of the men in front. Hence cavalry became important to break the spear bearing squares. The long spear/phalanx tactics were repeated in most European armies during the 1500's and early 1600's, with the same results. Skirmishers, of cavalry attacks to the flank or rear destroyed the phalanx utterly. Also, please leave me feedback!ĭue to the locked nature of spears passing between the Hoplites, and their interlocking shields, a phalanx was extremely efficient in the attack, but VERY difficult to shift in defence from side or rear attack, which was the main tactic in defeating them. I should try and create a more realistic scene. I am playing the game Amazon Total War way too much and these scene is right out of the game. I have read that âAmazonsâ, being Scythian or Rus woman, were nearly always buried with a bow. More diagnostically, they are buried with their weapons. Their bodies are buried at a rate lesser, but similar, to men. There is actually much evidence of Scythian woman warriors. In ancient times it was probably not very common for women to engage in battles, let alone this role. Modern day mobile cavalierly units, consisting of light tanks and lightly armored vehicles, perform these duties. Skirmisher's were, in fact, a massively important part of many armies. When we see the scene the last of the Hoplite ranks are diminishing but the Amazon's have paid a huge price with nearly as many killed on their side as the Hoplites an unacceptable rate of exchange for these light troops. The attack looked to become a rout when an archer group suddenly took note of the Skirmishers and fired several volleys into their ranks. ![]() Though the Skirmishers were badly matched, they outnumbered the Hoplites two to one and so the charge was ordered. As the dust quickly blew away it become obvious that an entire formation of Hoplites, men carrying long spears and slowly marching as a wall of spears, had been cut off from the enemy host. At the distant right flank a small thinly ranked group of Amazon Skirmishers moved forward as companion Cavalierly charged past lifting dust into the air. ![]()
